
The Painter’s Club

The Painter’s Club was a cabaret opened here in 1960 by the singer Rita Cadillac. Earlier in the century it was the home of painter Henri Rioux. He was one of the founding members (with Pierre Bonnard) of the artistic movement called L’École de Montmartre. At the end of the 19th century it was the offices of the La Revue Anarchiste.


Catherine Le Couey/Lecouey

Parisien Catherine Le Couey (or Lecouey) was a stage, cinema and radio actress. A woman of many talents she was also a fine costume designer and draughtswoman. In 1965 when she was living here she appeared in the film Le chant du monde alongside Hardy Krüger and Catherine Deneuve.

Martial Carré
(CHANSONNIERS)

Martial Carré first made a name for himself at the Caveau de la République with his satirical songs and poetic lyrics. In 1974 he would become the artistic director at the Caveau, where he kept the spirit of the chansonnier alive for another 25 years. In 1960 he shared the bill with Ricet Barrier, Serge Gainsbourg, Claude Nougaro and Georges Brassens at the Les Trois Baudets, located at the foot of the Montmartre hill in the Pigalle district.
Camille Verdier
(Trombone)

A versatile trombonist, Camille Verdier was a member of the Ars Nova Brass Quintet, founded in 1964. He was the director of the ENM (Ecole Nationale de Musique) in Châteauroux. Appearances on vinyl include releases with the Paris Jazz All Stars and alongside both Maurice Andre and Sylvio Gualda (who we encountered on Walk 1 and Walk 2).

Adrien Legros – Basse

Provençal bass-baritone Adrien Legros (1903-1993) made more than 4000 lyrical performances during his 60 year career. He was a valued member of the L’Opera de Marseille and Opéra Comique, singing many of the great roles (Mephisto, Escamillo, Scarpia, etc.) There is a street named after him in his hometown of Marseille – Rond-Point Adrien Legros.

Robert Piquet
(ARTISTE LYRIQUES)

Actor, singer and dancer known for his light classical and operetta records during the 1950s and 60s. In 1970 he sang in the vocal quartet Les Poivre et Sel, alongside Dominique Tirmont, Francis Linel and Georges Blaness (See Walk 1). In 1962 he appeared in the films Les culottes rouges (with Bourvil) and C’est pas moi, c’est l’autre (directed by Jean Boyer).

Jean-Luc Ponty
(Violin)

Versatile jazz violinist Jean-Luc Ponty has straddled many musical genres in his career including swing, bop, modal jazz, free jazz, and jazz-rock. He attended the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique in Paris and won the 1960 Premier Prix for violin. After completing his studies he joined the Concerts Lamoureux Symphony Orchestra in Paris and performed with local jazz groups in his spare time. In 1963 Ponty quit the symphony to begin a full-time career in jazz, and the rest is history!

Judith Magre

French actress Judith Magre (real name Simone Dupuis, b.1926) has enjoyed a successful 70+ year career. She joined the prestigious Sorbonne University in Paris to study philosophy but was soon intoxicated with the acting life. She began a career in the cinema, under the pseudonym of Simone Chambord. Eventually the moniker Judith Magre was born and she became an essential member of the Renaud-Barrault theatre troupe and the Théâtre National Populaire in the 1960s. The secret of Magre’s long career, according to her, is an indulgence of alcohol and cigarettes.
