Art Nouveau buildings by Hector Guimard – Things to do in the 16th arrondissement

The highest concentration of Hector Guimard’s building are in the 16th arrondissement. Guimard (1867-1942) was a French architect, designer, and a prominent figure in the Art Nouveau movement. He achieved early fame with his design for the Castel Beranger, the first Art Nouveau apartment building in Paris, which was selected in an 1899 competition as one of the best new building facades in the city. He is best known for the ornamental Art Nouveau curves, which cover the entrances of many Paris Metro stations.

Starting at the Castel Béranger walk down Rue Jean de la Fontaine and you’ll find several examples of his work. The quiet Rue Agar, just a stone’s throw away, has many Guimard buildings, with even the street sign designed in his signature style, and all those gorgeous details, like drainpipes, balconies, and also air vents. Don’t stop there, you’ll spot several more as you walk towards Auteuil.
